Family-owned and operated since 1936, Cupid Candies was a family-owned business founded by Paul Stefanos to manufacture quality chocolates, nuts, candies, and ice cream. 80+ years later, Cupid Candies still serves Chicagoland residents from their retail locations.
The Stefanos Brothers, Paul & Leo, came to the United States from Messinia Greece in the 1930s and went on to “make confectionary history" in Chicago. Paul opened Cupid Candies, which to this day flourishes in Chicago's southwest side neighborhoods. Paul's brother Leo invented the famous Dove ice cream bar, and sold to M&M/Mars, Inc. Cupid Candies was managed by Paul's son John Stefanos, and now by Brown Sugar Bakeries, Founder & CEO, Stephanie Hart.
Cupid Candies' first store was at 79th and Ashland where only fudge, toffee, and popcorn were sold, but by 1940 Paul and his wife Pauline opened another store at 3207 W. 63rd Street along with a small manufacturing plant to expand. Due to continued growth, they moved to 3143 W. 63rd Street, in 1946, expanding again in 1956 with a new plant at 7637 S. Western Avenue, where they still operate today. They also operated two "old fashioned" ice cream and soda fountain shops in Oak Lawn and Orland Park.
In the 1970s, Cupid Candies entered into wholesale and private label markets, supplying dozens of independent candy shops throughout Chicagoland and the Midwest with both regular and sugar-free chocolates. Some of their private label customers have included Crate & Barrel, Figi's, Inc of Marshfield, WI, and Golden Farm Candies of South Bend, IN, who offer a complete line of sugar-free chocolates distributed nationally. They have also produced Marshall Field’s famous “Frango Mints” line. Expansion continued through the 2000s servicing Hospital & Floral Gift Shops, Gift Basket Companies, Boutique Grocers, and more.
